This qualification reflects the role of entry level volunteer workers. At this level, work takes place under direct, regular supervision within clearly defined guidelines. This qualification may be used as a pathway for workforce entry.

This qualification consists of a series of 6 Modules designed specifically around the generic skills required by most workers entering the volunteer sector. Modules can either be covered  in 6-days’ time or in 12 sessions over a 15-26 week period.

As part of your involvement, you will be undertaking volunteering activities through an approved organisation for a minimum of 20 hours. Volunteer activities can either be event based, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, as long as they run for 15 weeks. These activities provide the basis for learning and assessment and will cover the entire period of the program.

 

Module 1: It’s all about you!
This Module looks at attitudes and values, why people respond the way they do in different situations. Using a basic tool to help students understand how they react in situations and how to respond appropriately, managing personal stress

Module 2: You and communication
Communicating clearly with clients, peers, staff, supervisors.

Module 3: You and the team
Exploring some of the ways participants can work with supervisors, clients or peers and deal with misunderstandings effectively.

Module 4: You and diversity
Learning about the benefits of diversity in the workplace how to work effectively with diversity.

Module 5: You and the organisation
Legislative requirements, policies and procedures, including Work Health and Safety (WHS); privacy; abuse requirements. Also relationships between paid and unpaid workers.

Module 6: You and your role
Organising and completing daily activities, boundaries, matching jobs with skills in your volunteer role and managing work role and conflicting requirements

These modules are covered by the four listed compulsory units:

CHCDIV001 – Work with Diverse People
CHCVOL001 – Be an effective volunteer
HLTWHS001 – Participate in Workplace Health & Safety
BSBCMM201 – Communicate in the workplace

Electives will be additional to core modules and provide the opportunity to specialise in an area of interest eg: customer service, first aid, administrative and office work, Board involvement, etc. Electives will also assist in meeting mandatory requirements in many volunteer roles around Working with Children or First Aid. (Three electives must be chosen from the below list)
